The Morning Routine That Changed How I Show Up Every Day

If you’ve ever set New Year’s resolutions that didn’t last, this episode is for you. Not because you didn’t want it badly enough—but because you may have skipped the most important foundation.

In this solo episode, I’m talking about morning routines and why having one in the first place is one of the best steps you can take toward real, lasting success—especially as women and mothers whose seasons of life are constantly changing. I break down the science behind routines, why motivation isn’t a strategy, and how systems—not goals—are what actually move us forward.

Then I walk you through my own morning routine. It isn’t perfect or aesthetic. It’s layered, flexible, and sustainable—and it’s helped me show up more grounded, more present, and more aligned in every role I carry.

In This Episode, I Share

  • Why motivation alone isn’t reliable (and what works better)

  • The truth about New Year’s resolutions—and why most of them fail

  • Why I believe we don’t rise to the level of our goals, but fall to the level of our systems

  • How morning routines reduce decision fatigue and create momentum

  • Why routines look different in different seasons of motherhood

  • How building a simple routine can change how you show up every day

My 6-Part Morning Routine (Practical + Spiritual Layers)

My routine isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency. These are the six things I return to most mornings that set the tone for my day.

1. Movement / Exercise
I start my day with movement because it wakes up my body and my brain. Exercise isn’t about how I look—it’s about energy, clarity, and resilience. When I move first thing in the morning, I show up happier, clearer, and more capable for everything that comes next.

2. Getting Ready (Shower, Hair, Makeup, Clothes)
This isn’t about vanity—it’s about self-respect. Even if I’m working from home or staying with my kids, getting ready tells my brain, I’m showing up today.
My quick tip? Brows, mascara, and a little lip can change everything in under five minutes.

3. Making My Bed
This habit feels small, but it’s powerful. Making my bed creates an immediate win. It brings order instead of chaos and builds momentum before the day even starts.

4. Prayer
Prayer is where I align my will before the world starts pulling on it. I don’t pray perfectly or at the same time every morning—but I make space. Often, that space is in the shower, where it’s quiet and uninterrupted. I focus my prayers on today—what I need help with right now.

5. Scripture Study
Reading my scriptures grounds me. This is where I feel the Lord speaks to me most clearly. It’s a habit that started in college and has stayed with me because of how much clarity and guidance it brings into my daily life.

6. Journaling (The Five Minute Journal)
Journaling gives my thoughts somewhere safe to land. Each morning I write what I’m grateful for, what would make the day great, and my affirmations. At night, I reflect on what went well and what I learned—often something from my scripture study. It’s simple, but it’s been one of the most consistent anchors in my life.

What I Want You to Know

If you don’t have a morning routine, your resolutions don’t have roots. But when you build even a simple routine, everything else becomes more possible—clearer thinking, stronger faith, better habits, and more consistency.

Morning routines work because your brain is most impressionable early in the day. You’re either programming it intentionally or letting chaos do it for you.

My Challenge to You

If you’re listening and thinking, I want this year to be different, start here.
Make your resolution to build a morning routine. Start small. Stay consistent. Layer it over time.

Why This Matters

Through Her Layered Life, I’ve had the privilege of talking with so many women—women building businesses, raising families, serving quietly, leading boldly, and holding so much together behind the scenes.

Our lives are layered. No two look the same. And yet, all of them matter.

Morning routines aren’t about checking boxes. They’re about honoring the weight and beauty of the influence we carry. They help us show up steady—spiritually, mentally, and physically—for whatever role we’re stepping into today.

You don’t have to do it all. You don’t have to do it perfectly. But you do deserve a beginning that prepares you for the work and influence ahead of you.

Because her life is layered—and her influence can truly change the world.
